  1. If my home was to catch fire and my family and pets were safe then I would want to take the prayer shawl and coin book from my Grandma Jane. They are probably not very useful in a situation like that but the sentimental value would be enough to bring a little bit of light into that dark situation.

So I understand why they have to leave. Their home has been destroyed and they are being threatened by Tios Luis. I also understand that Esperanza's mother marrying Tio Luis would be difficult on both of them because he is such a bad man. But at this point I almost think that it would have been easier (not emotionally) for them to marry. They would have been able to stay at their home, surrounded by the memories of their loved one, the servant family could have stayed at that point as well. I just feel really bad for all of them having to uproot and start over. But I guess that is probably what I would have chose to do as well.

  2. but starting over represents a new life, no? a chance even to carry on with life. staying would be like a living death. Papá, Mamá, and the land would all be dead & the "servants" gone as well...

Dylan and I actually bought a small portable (size of a briefcase) fireproof safe to keep passports, birth certificates, etc & a copy of our hard drive in (contains our family photos & photos of our childhoods that I have scanned as well as Dylan's family photos from England that I have had scanned).

    1. You're right that would be starting over as well.

That is a really good idea. That way if a fire were to occur at least you would have you important documents and some memories.

  3. I posted under this twice last week but I just realized it still didn't post so here's a third go. I would attempt to save my pets and if i had the chance I would try to save my phone.

  4. I've been having issues posting as well. So I'll try to remember what I tried to submit last week...
If there was a fire, I would try to save all of my favorite things from my room. For example, my camera that was given to me when I was 9 years old is very important to me, as well as a jewelry box from my grandmother. Of course, I would also try to get Eska out as well, along with whoever was still in the house.
For Esperanza, this must have been extremely difficult because when she was woken up, the house was already engulfed in flames. so even if she wanted to, she wouldn't have been able to go back inside.

  5. In my own home someday I will definitely keep a fireproof box or safe in an accessible place to keep every important document that is necessary nowadays, such as birth certificates and whatnot. It really is a logical idea to keep one in your own home under lock and key.
Nevertheless if I were put in this situation say, tomorrow, then an obvious priority is my parents. (And knowing my stepmother, she would without a doubt carry the dog out whether she wanted to go or not..so there is one less thing for me to carry out) I think that if there were any objects worth saving I would leave that up to my dad to decide. He would be the one to understand what is worth the trouble and what is not. So, I'm not really sure what I would do my best to save (I suppose following orders is what I do best). I really dont have much of anything that i NEED that wouldn't be right close to me. My phone I would obviously grab right off the bat to call 911. After that I think that I would fill my pockets with anything valuable in my immediate surroundings.
